Kia India and RTIH to build prototyping centre in Amaravati
Kia India and the Ratan Tata Innovation Hub (RTIH) signed a memorandum of understanding on 2 June 2026 to set up the Advanced Prototyping and Innovation Center, APIC Labs, at RTIH's Amaravati hub. It will give hardware startups access to industry-grade prototyping tools, product validation and manufacturing infrastructure. No investment figure or opening date has been given.

What happened
Kia India and the Ratan Tata Innovation Hub (RTIH), Andhra Pradesh’s state-backed innovation network, signed a memorandum of understanding on 2 June 2026 to set up the Advanced Prototyping and Innovation Center, APIC Labs, at RTIH’s Amaravati hub, APAC News Network reported.
The centre is meant to close the gap between a working concept and a product that can be made at volume, the stage where hardware startups most often stall. It will offer industry-grade prototyping tools, product validation services and advanced manufacturing infrastructure, with a focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, electronics, embedded systems, smart manufacturing, mobility technologies and industrial automation.
The MoU was signed by Dhatri Reddy, group chief executive of RTIH, and for Kia India by Tae Hyun Kim, chief administrative officer, Jungho An, senior advisor for legal, compliance, corporate affairs, CSR and PR, and Dr T. Somasekhara Reddy, principal advisor.
Why it matters
Prototyping is the expensive middle of hardware. A five-axis machining centre, a coordinate measuring machine and an environmental test chamber are what a founder needs for three weeks and cannot justify buying. A shared centre with those tools changes who can afford to develop a product: the two-person automation startup in Vijayawada, and the established MSME in Pune that wants to validate a new fixture before tooling up.
The same equipment is what the machine-tool and automation exhibitors sell from an exhibition floor — the next one within reach of a Pune MSME is EngiExpo Pune in November 2026. A publicly backed prototyping centre is a buyer of that equipment, and its users are the next generation of buyers. The machines themselves, and the firms selling them, are the standing subject of this site’s factory automation news from India.
What happens next
The MoU gives no opening date, no investment figure and no list of equipment. RTIH’s site describes the Amaravati hub but not APIC Labs’s timeline. EngiNewsIndia will report the centre’s opening and its access terms when RTIH or Kia India publishes them, alongside the rest of the technology and AI in industry coverage. Until then the announcement is an intent, and is reported here as one.
